We were in Nebraska, just after the Notre Dame game on September 11. We got home a few days later.
On our flight to Hartford, I sat next to a New York City fireman. He was wearing a FDNY shirt with his firehouse ladder number proudly displayed. He was rushing home to New York after being on a bus from Las Vegas for two days, where he had been on vacation. Turned out, St. Louis, where I was connecting from Lincoln, was the first open airport he could find, and Hartford the closest airport to New York, since NYC's airports were still closed.
He told me that four firemen buddies from his fire station were among the missing, and that if he hadn't been on vacation, he could have been one of them.
Our thoughts are with the victims, their family and friends, the rescue workers and volunteers, and our troops far from home.
