Gym Cracks By Jim November 27, 2003 TOP TOPIC SOLICH Husker coach faces more than the Buffaloes on Friday By Jim (Babe) Berryman MissingNebraska.com Nebraska football Coach Solich is under close scrutiny in this state. There are daily reports on his future as head coach of the Huskers. The Lincoln newspaper earlier this week published an article stating Athletic Director Scott Pederson would ask Solich to retire after the Colorado game. This newspaper quoted three anonymous sources as saying Pederson would replace Solich as the end of this season. Solich has responded by saying he doesn't intend to retire. Even Tom Osborne has been quoted in the local newspapers. Osborne indicated he was unaware of any ouster effort and was generally supportive of his protege. The Grand Island Daily Independent Tuesday's edition featured five articles on the front page in its sports section. Three of these articles featured the Nebraska football coach situation. The three articles included big bold headlines. "T.O. unaware of ouster", Big 12 Conference peers defend Solich", and "Recruiting is at risk if Solich fired" caught the attention of readers. The Husker coaching situation was also discussed on ESPN earlier this week. Pederson will only say Solich will be evaluated at the conclusion of this season. A lack of a supportive statement by Pederson has provided fuel for the controversy. Locally, public opinion is divided. Solich has his backers and his detractors. A Kearney man has said he will withhold his donation for the new facility, until Solich is fired. Others cite his 57-19 record as one reason for his retention. Many people in this area feel the Huskers must win at Colorado for Solich to keep his position.
