NU women's hoops team vs. the college dudes...latest Collier controversy

The following ad appeared on the University of Nebraska campus, "Want to hang out with tall women?"

The ad was an effort to attract basketball players to help prepare a short-handed women's team at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Coach Connie Yori was down to seven players at one time during the year.

Many tried out, from all walks of life. Approximately 25 male college students showed up. Some thought it would be fairly easy to hang with the women. Wrong!

Micah Parker, NU's director of basketball operations said, "Some of the guys were crushed. We were very nice to them. We told them, 'Don't call us, we'll call you.'"

Husker men’s basketball coach Barry Collier's son was a member of the scout team. Matt Travers, another member of the scout team, indicated at first he was reluctant to be very physical with the women. In press reports Travis said "They surprised me. They gave me some bruises. I'd say Katie Morse gave me a couple. Not to sound like a pansy or anything."

Hopefully next year Coach Yori will have sufficient numbers and quality to be competitive in the Big-12.

Husker Men’s Coach Barry Collier has been receiving considerable criticism from sports talk radio and the print media.

Although the team's poor performances this year does receive some criticism, much of the controversy stems from Collier's refusal to play Creighton University on a home and home basis.

Omaha resident Tom McCormick writes in the World-Herald, "When Coach Collier first rode his high horse into Nebraska and declared he saw no benefit in playing mid-major Creighton home and away, I was confused.

Now he says he is not interested in a possible Creighton-Nebraska matchup to open Omaha's new downtown arena. I'm now dumbfounded.

Earth to Barry: Your RPI is killing us. You lost to Alaska-Fairbanks! Your starting five should all have brilliant careers in masonry based on the number of bricks they've tossed this year.

Breaking a nine-game losing streak is reasons for banner headlines in the World-Herald. And you act like you're in the driver's seat?

What am I missing here?"

New North Dakota State Football Coach Craig Bohl has told three assistants they will not be a part of his program. Bohl, who was fired in early December as Nebraska's defensive coordinator, was named to his new position last Friday.
