POWERBALL DREAMS OF NYC
A Powerball jackpot win and it's off to New York City

By Jim (Babe) Berryman

I plan on winning the Powerball lottery. It may be as early as tonight.

How would I spend the money? I have a nice home, late model cars, and all the necessities to live a comfortable life.

So, how would I splurge? I would rent an apartment in Manhattan for a year or more. New York City is my favorite city.

Marcia and I recently returned from the East Coast. We spent time on Long Island with Randy, my step-son, and in Connecticut with a couple young men who are just great--Jim and Saiful.

Christmas night and the next night were spent in the Big Apple at the Renaissance Hotel. Usually our itinerary includes a Broadway play.

Last year we saw “Mamma Mia” and the year before “Chicago”. Young Jim provided tickets for us a few years ago to see “Miss Saigon”. All were tremendous productions.

This year we elected not to see a Broadway production.

In the past Marcia and I had spent time in Little Italy and Chinatown. On this trip, we devoted one day to the Soho district. A quaint neighborhood. We had lunch at Teresa's, an eating establishment recommended in several travel and food magazines. This Eastern European restaurant had many selections, of course most of them cholesterol laden.

The next day was spent on Manhattan's upper Eastside. You know the area, Jackie Kennedy Onassis lived in this area.

Our step-son likes to frequent expensive boutiques. I spent time in two establishments that cater to the wealthy--Barney's and Dolce & Gabanna.

I felt a little uncomfortable--in my $25.00 J. C. Penney corduroy slacks and New Balance jogging shoes.

I did a little browsing. One shirt I really liked was priced at $2420.00 (this is not a typo). Even with 33 to 50 percent off, I felt the shirt was a little above my clothing allowance. Frogger's in Greeley doesn't require a thousand dollar shirt for admittance.

Lunch that day was at Dewat's, an Indian restaurant. Good, but very spicy.

After visiting on Long Island and Connecticut, Marcia and I returned on New Year's Day to the city. The Shoreham Hotel on West 55th Street was the hotel we had booked.

We had stayed at the Renaissance Hotel before. The Renaissance is a luxury hotel and situated in the middle of Times Square.

The Shoreham is located a few blocks north of Times Square, but is also a 4-star hotel.

Both the Renaissance and the Shoreham reservations were made on MissingNebraska.com We were able to book the Shoreham for $115 for the night. Not bad, considerable mid-town Manhattan during Christmas vacation.

The Shoreham had candy on the pillow, a luxurious robe, reading materials and many other little extras. Extras you usually don't find in a Super-8.

Our flight was scheduled for 5:40 p.m. from LaGuardia. Early morning we deposited our luggage with the bellhop and took off for Central Park, a scant four blocks from the Shoreham.

Central Park is a fantastic experience. I don't recall ever missing Central Park on a New York trip. We spent several hours exploring the park.

In the past. we had eaten at Mickey Mantle's Restaurant/Bar which is on the street south of Central Park. A 30-45 minutes wait for a table necessitated a move on to a little Italian restaurant located nearby. Then it was on to the LaGuardia.

In New York City, one can step out of his/her hotel and be in a different culture in a few minutes, by walking, or riding a subway or bus. One can experience many different cultures and happenings within a few minutes, so unlike many other major cities whose downtown areas are just shops and apartments.

So tonight, or sometime in the near future, when my six lottery numbers appear, this lucky Nebraskan will be headed for the Big Apple to locate a apartment.
