TRICKS AND TREATS
Strong 2nd half, trick plays boost Nebraska past Colorado 37-14

You could still smell the aroma of turkey from the day before, but it looked like Halloween at Memorial Stadium Friday.

Big 12 North Division Champs Nebraska got the icing on its cake with a 37-14 win over Colorado at Memorial Stadium. The Huskers are flying high and full of tricks heading into the Big 12 Championship showdown with Oklahoma.

Nebraska, already knowing the North title was theirs, had a strong 2nd-half against the Buffaloes, and cruised to a solid win. Of course, all was not at ease going into the locker room at halftime tied with the Buffs at 14-14.

A little trickery helped the Huskers along the way, as Nebraska pulled 6 rabbits out of the hat during the game. Four of the trick plays succeeded with flying colors. All were memorable, including a 4th-down fake for a 30-plus yard touchdown in the first half to go up 14-7.

Also nice was an Oscar caliber performance from NU quarterback Zac Taylor, who looked as if he were walking away from a botched play on a 4th-down situation in the 4th quarter. Instead safety Tierre Green took the snapped ball and scampered for 7 yards and an NU 1st down.

The only thing that would have made the play more memorable was if Taylor had whipped out a cell phone to text Buffs fans "C-U Later".

With the win, Nebraska finishes the regular season at 9-3 (6-2 Big 12). Colorado will stay home for bowl season in a major way, finishing with an embarrassing 2-10 (2-6 Big 12) record.

Nebraska plays South champ Oklahoma this Saturday night in the Big 12 championship in Kansas City. Kickoff is scheduled for just after 7 p.m. Central.

Treats, No Tricks at Union Pub Washington DC Watch Party

I was in Washington DC and northern Virginia for Thanksgiving weekend. I made it to the Union Pub in Washington DC to catch the 2nd half of the NU-CU game. This bar and grill 2 blocks from Union Station is home to the DC Huskers, also known as the National Capital Cornhuskers.

What a great time!

Before hitting Union Pub, I was able to keep up with play-by-play action, courtesy a fellow Husker fan's Blackberry while on the streets of Washington DC. Amazing technology, and a great way to keep tabs on your team. I could read text and stats about every play.

There was a big crowd at Union Pub. It wasn't quite as crowded as a visit there a few years ago, but still, it always blows my mind to walk into a pub just 2 blocks from bustling Union Station in the nation's capitol and discover a sea of red whoopin' it up.

I estimate the crowd at about 200, scattered between 3 rooms indoors, and since the weather was fairly mild, a whole slew of people were outdoors under a heated canopy.

Union Pub made it feel like home. The bar had an Elk Creek drink special. For those not aware, an Elk Creek is a famous drink served up for years at Sandy's in downtown Lincoln. It has a reputation for being as strong as its orange juice taste.

Rumor had it, Union Pub had the Sandy's Elk Creek recipe. It was convincing to me and tasted much like the real thing.

Every time Nebraska scored, NU fight songs were played over the loud speaker. Outdoors, a guy in red hummed the songs loud enough for everyone to clap along with him.

We were doing that a lot in the 2nd half.

A great scene. If you are ever in Washington DC on Big Red Game Day, a visit to Union Pub is a must on any Husker fan's "must-do" list.

GO BIG RED!
