NU-CU DUST SETTLES, CROUCH STILL EYEING HEISMAN.
Crouch performance against Colorado better than score indicates.
When all the dust settled after Friday’s shell-shocking day, Eric Crouch suddenly appears clear as a bell on the horizon. Despite losing to the Buffs 62-36, Eric Crouch had 162 yards rushing, 198 yards passing, set a school record for total yards, and reached the 1,000 yard rushing mark. He also sat on the sidelines watching the Blackshirts stink things up for awhile, but that’s beside the point. Or is it THE point?
What a great set of stats to have in a game, especially if you’re a Heisman hopeful. Eric Crouch’s performance got lost in the post-game shock that swept through the Husker fan community. We were stunned. Embarrassed. Mad. Wanting a rematch. The last thing on our minds was Eric Crouch. Bringing him up would hurt even more. There goes the Heisman. Somebody get me a Rolaids.
And so it has come to this. Nebraska has a slim chance of winning the national championship, even after the Colorado crush. The Huskers are off to a big bowl game. People all over the country agree that what happened against Colorado was almost unbelievable, as if the Huskers had thrown the game or something. Every team deserves to have a bad game. The Huskers are 11-1 after all.
And, quietly Eric Crouch went on to nearly lead the Huskers to a beautiful third quarter comeback. Crouch didn’t fumble. Crouch wasn’t on defense, letting the Buffaloes run wild, and his stats show a good game. So, I say Crouch for Heisman. And to Eric Crouch, we apologize for letting our emotions get the best of us on Friday night, temporarily blacking you out.
11/28/01: Crouch named Award finalist.
