Huskers serve up tasty dish of the past in
73-31 rout of K-State
November 11, 2007
By Jim D. Berryman
Thank you Cornhuskers of 2007 for that delicious
all-you-can-eat buffet.
It wasn't just a snack, tidbit or appetizer, the Huskers had
all Big Red fans licking their fingers, savoring every
minute of a complete performance.
It was a
stunning 73-31 victory by the Huskers over Kansas State.
Nebraska has to be the best 5-6 team in the nation.
NU quarterback Joe Ganz racked up numbers that had Nebraska
fans going back for seconds. Thirds.
In the all-you-can-eat buffet of scoring Nebraska put on
Saturday afternoon, Ganz was the one carving up the meat.
In only his second start as a Cornhusker, Ganz threw 40
passes, and completed 30 of them, along with a school-record
7 touchdowns.
The man with two short names was big on yardage too,
throwing for 510, count 'em, 510 yards.
The Huskers had over 700 yards of total offense against the
hapless Kitty Cats.
The game had Big Red fans shaking their heads, asking "where
were you?"
That question could be asked of Ganz and the Cornhuskers in
general.
The Huskers could do anything and everything they wanted to
K-State. Yes it was the same team that went on the road and
thumped Texas.
It was also Kansas State's third-straight loss.
It was Nebraska's first win after five-straight losses. And
boy did it feel good.
At the Connecticut Yankees for Nebraska watch party at
Yogi's in Meriden, it got to the point where the "high-fives
amongst the whole group for every touchdown" rule was
leaving hands raw and tender.
Kind of like the meat Ganz served up at the buffet Saturday
in Lincoln.
Throughout the afternoon watching the game, I mentioned to
other Connecticut Huskers that it couldn't be all that often
that a team has 76 points scored on them the week before,
only to come back and score 73 the very next week.
After I returned home, I heard sports analyst Craig James
say the very same thing on TV.
It had never happened in the history of college football.
Finally, a record from the Callahan era Husker fans can
boast about.
If Nebraska plays like they did Saturday, on the day after
Thanksgiving, it will be an all-you-can-eat Buffalo buffet.
For now, Nebraska fans will savor every minute of a winning
weekend.
It's been a long time since we tasted this.
Enjoy.
