Behind-the-scenes drama overshadows NU
match-up with K-State
November 7, 2007
By Jim D. Berryman
Where to begin.
Jim Rose announces he's giving up his job of "voice of the
Huskers" on radio.
Immediately.
Bill Callahan,
despite receiving the most severe criticism of any coach in
Nebraska history, is staying put.
At least for today.
Defensive coordinator Kevin Cosgrove is "just sick about"
everything that went wrong on the defensive side of the ball
last weekend at Kansas.
So are Husker fans.
Tom Osborne must not be getting much sleep these days.
Do we really want to wish this mess on a terrific guy who
could be taking it a lot easier than this?
Imagine the walk-on-eggshells mood at the NU Sports office
in the south stadium.
So quiet, you can hear a soon-to-be-cashed Bill Callahan
check drop on the floor.
Oh yeah. And there's a game this weekend.
With all the goings-on behind the scenes at Nebraska
football, it's tough to focus on what's about to happen on
the field, rather than off.
Nebraska, 4-6 (1-5) hosts Kansas State
5-4 (3-3). Kickoff is slated for just after 11:30 a.m.
central. The game will be televised nationally on
Versus.
Not quite sure how Nebraska will respond in its final home
game of the season. That after giving up the most first-half
and final points in Nebraska football history.
I won't even mention the number here.
Kansas State is coming off a road loss at Iowa State. The
Wildcats seem to have lost a bit of wildness since beating
Texas in Austin a few weeks ago.
The Cyclones' win over K-State was bigger than just a win,
as it lifted Iowa State out of sole possession of last place
in the Big 12 North.
Now they share the honor with Nebraska.
Let's hope the Huskers can bounce back and put up enough
defense to stop a team with no where near the talent as
Kansas.
The Husker offense, led by new starting QB Joe Ganz, should
be able to put some points on the board.
Here's to defense that holds.
Go Big Red!
