Big 12 basement-dweller Iowa State hits Lincoln to face surging Nebraska

By Jim D. Berryman
MissingNebraska.com

Last season, the Nebraska Cornhuskers limped into Ames, Iowa after getting trounced by Penn State and lost in shocking fashion to the Cyclones.

What a difference a season makes.

The spiral downward actually began toward the end of last season. UConn came into Ames and stuffed the Cyclones. Iowa State has not been able to recover.

Nebraska is on the other end of the football spectrum. The Huskers are heading up. The Huskers are heading into the difficult homestretch of the ’03 season. The Huskers are heading into a road game with Texas a week from Saturday.

Kickoff for the game between nos. 11/14 Nebraska 6-1, 2-1 and Iowa State 2-5, 0-3 is 11:40 a.m. CDT Saturday. The game is available on pay-per-view. Contact your local cable or satellite provider for details. Live audio of the game can be heard through Huskers.com and on Pinnacle Sports Network stations in Nebraska and around the country.

But as we have seen this season in college football, no team can look past another. The Cyclones desperately want to turn things around after losing its star quarterback from last season. A win at Nebraska would be a major step in that direction.

In addition, the Cyclones get the Huskers on Texas-eve. A big game in Austin is on the Husker menu next and the Cyclones hope they are much more than an appetizer. ISU hopes Nebraska already has its heart and mind in Austin.

Nebraska cruises into the game basking in the national spotlight after a 48-12 rout of Texas A&M. The Missouri loss, while still painful to relive, is but a memory. The Huskers are ranked no. 11 in the first BCS poll of the season. The Blackshirts are back in a Bo…er big way. Keep winning, keep movin’ on up. Lose to the ‘Clones and say good-bye to the BCS.

So even though it’s the Big 12 basement-dweller coming into Lincoln this Saturday, the Huskers can’t afford to look past Iowa State. One game at a time. Big Red fans saw improvement in the Texas A&M game after the Mizzou loss, now we’re hoping to see even more improvement.

If that happens, expect a Big Red blowout.

The score above is my humble prediction
