SO CLOSE!
Late field goal lifts Texas past upset-minded Huskers 22-20

Even Mother Nature got into the act of trying to ice walk-on
sophomore Texas kicker Ryan Bailey in the final seconds of the 4th
quarter Saturday in Lincoln.
With snow wildly swirling in the air, Bailey, making his first-ever
appearance in a college football game, calmly kicked a 22-yard field
goal with 23 seconds left to give the No. 5 Longhorns a thrilling
22-20 win over No. 17 Nebraska.
Bailey had come into the game for injured Texas kicker Greg Johnson,
who wasn't exactly having a banner day of booting the ball
between the uprights. Johnson had missed 2 field goals and had an
extra point blocked.
Just before the Bailey field goal, Husker coach Bill Callahan called
time out to review a play that really wasn't in doubt. Callahan was doing all he
could to try to get under the skin of the novice Longhorn kicker.
It wasn't to be, as Texas nailed the field goal, and Nebraska had
too much field, too little time and too few timeouts to score again
before the final tick of the clock.
But what a game!
Both teams played excellent defense. The Huskers were not able to
rush all that much against Texas, but Texas didn't exactly run all
over the Huskers either.
Husker quarterback
Zac Taylor went 15 of 28 for 277 yards and 2 touchdowns. Taylor was
intercepted once.
Texas quarterback Colt McCoy was 25 of 39 for 220 yards and 2
touchdowns.
Texas improves to 7-1 (4-0 Big 12). Nebraska drops to 6-2 (3-1
Big 12).
The Huskers have an excellent chance to face Texas again, as
unless Big Red stumbles again in Big 12 play, they are still in the
driver's seat to win the Big 12 North.
If the Huskers do, and the Longhorns hold on to win the Big 12
South, the 'Horns and Huskers will play again in the Big 12
championship game in Kansas City in early December.
Let's hope the Huskers take care of business, one game at a time,
and the above scenario will come to fruition.
Just one more shot is all NU needs, as I think most college football
fans watching the televised game on Saturday could see that
Nebraska is indeed "back". Maybe not quite "there", but "back".
It was a heartbreaker of a loss for the Huskers, but an indicator
that NU has indeed come a long way in a couple seasons. Nice try,
Big Red.
Up next for Nebraska is a date in Stillwater with the Oklahoma State
Cowboys. Kickoff is slated for 2:30 p.m. central and the game will
be televised regionally by ABC.
Connecticut Watch Party Major Fun!
As always, it was a great time at TK's in New Haven. Even though
I went home empty-handed in the halftime raffle, there was a large
group in Husker red, with just a few Longhorn fans here and there.
The gathering featured many Husker "pacers", with the majority of
the Connecticut Husker faithful unable to stay seated during the
nail-biting final quarter of the game. Many were pacing back and
forth in front of the big screen TV. It was a blast!
Go Big Red!
