Nebraska's game with Texas A&M begs slew of questions
October 18, 2007
By Jim D. Berryman
So, what's going to happen on the field at Memorial Stadium
this Saturday when Nebraska lines up against Texas A&M?
Good question.
After everything that happened off the field in the past
week, partially because of what happened on the field last
Saturday against Oklahoma State, it really is anyone's
guess.
The Nebraska Cornhuskers (4-3, 1-2) host the Texas A&M
Aggies (5-2, 2-1). Kickoff is at 1:05 p.m. central. The game
will not be televised.
Perhaps those in college football network programming picked
their games a bit too soon. After all, controversy gets
ratings, and boy did Nebraska have some controversy a day
after the announcement that NU-A&M would not be televised.
NU athletic director Steve Pederson was fired, and a day
later, legendary Husker coach Tom Osborne was hired as
interim athletic director.
If you believe rumors running rampant from talk shows to
blogs to message boards, to cafes, bars and water coolers
across the great state of Nebraska, Coach Bill
Callahan is next to be sent packing.
So will the Huskers come to play? Do the Husker players
support Callahan? Will Tom Osborne stand on the sidelines?
Will the Huskers play dead, ensuring a Callahan exit at the
end of the season? Will NU fans boo again if things get
ugly? Will they cheer if things get ugly, signaling a
sure-bet Callahan exit at the end of the season? Or will Tom
Osborne's coattails energize the Huskers and march them to
victory over the Aggies?
All good questions.
You'll have to be in the stands at Memorial Stadium on
Saturday, or be listening on the radio or online to find
out. It should be interesting.
For Nebraska, "rock bottom" status was achieved last
Saturday, when the average Oklahoma State Cowboys came to
town and thumped the Huskers 45-14, after leading 38-0 at
halftime.
The shockwaves are still bouncing back and forth between the
east, west, north and south stands at 10th and Vine.
Technically, Nebraska could still win the Big 12 North, but
a lot of things would have to happen.
Okay, the Husker optimist in me is showing again. After all,
the Huskers were unable to stop the Cowboys at all in the
first half last weekend, so why should this weekend be any
different?
But, boy is
this weekend different.
For me, instead of watching the game at Yogi's Sports Bar in
Meriden, Connecticut, I'll be in Lincoln...either at the
game, or listening with other Husker fans in a downtown
Lincoln bar.
Can't wait! It will be interesting to see if questions get
answered this Saturday, or if the game will only bring about
more questions.
Tune in and find out.
