HOPE VS. 'HORNS
Nebraska's chances are better than lately in showdown vs. Texas

The two most recent entrants into the elite college football 800
all-time victory club square off in Lincoln this Saturday, but for
the Nebraska Cornhuskers, the game means so much more than a chance
at win number 801.
A Husker win over the Longhorns would mean an end to years of Husker
frustration and disappointment against the Texas Longhorns.
A Husker win over Texas would make a trip to the Big 12 Championship
game in Kansas City a much better possibility. Call it a likelihood.
A Husker win over Texas would serve notice to the college football
world that the men with the red "N" on their helmets are indeed,
back.
A Husker win over Texas would send all those burnt-orange wearin'
Texas fans back to weird Austin, sitting on their Hook 'em Horns
hands.
A Husker win over Texas would be absolutely crazy, dude.
Lincoln would be nuts, Husker fans worldwide would rejoice, all
would be right in Husker Nation after years of disappointment, a
lack of confidence, and general unease.
At least for a few days.
Now I realize I'm getting ahead of myself a bit here. But wasn't it
fun?
Seriously, it's a huge game for both teams this Saturday.
Nothing but respect for the Longhorns program from this Husker
fan/reporter.
Even though the series record between the two teams is no where near
as lopsided as it seems by the comments above. The Longhorns
actually hold just a 6-4 all-time series edge over the Cornhuskers.
The fact that Nebraska and Texas only play each other two years on,
then two years off, means there are only so many chances at such a
win. Especially since NU only gets UT in Lincoln once every four
years.
Texas arrives in
Lincoln with a 6-1 (3-0 Big 12) record and ranked number 5 in both
major polls. In the newly-released BCS poll, Texas is number 9.
Nebraska has an identical record to Texas at 6-1 (3-0 Big 12), but
the Huskers are ranked No. 16/17 in major polls, and No. 17 in the
BCS poll.
All of the above would change dramatically with a Husker win. A
Husker loss to Texas would be disappointing again, but there's
nothing to say NU couldn't get UT's number again in the Big 12
championship game in chilly Kansas City in early December.
After all, the Huskers are in sole possession of 1st place in the
Big 12 North. A loss to Texas wouldn't change all that much,
especially since Nebraska still has Missouri at home in Lincoln in a
couple weeks.
Kickoff for the monumental Big 12 South-North showdown is set for
just after 11 a.m. Central. It will be televised to much of the
country on ABC, but much of the west coast will not get the game.

Texas achieved its 800th all-time win against USC in the Rose Bowl
last season. That win also gave the Longhorns a national
championship. The Longhorns are six all-time wins ahead of the
Huskers, who joined the 800 club last Saturday with a 21-3 win over
Kansas State.
It has been so, so long since Nebraska defeated the Longhorns in a
regular season game. But this year, it really seems the Huskers can
get it done, especially after seeing Texas get spanked at home by
No. 1 Ohio State earlier this season. The Longhorns don't have seem
as untouchable as they did last season.
It should be a great game. Let's hope Husker fans come ready to make
some noise, and Nebraska can get out in front of Texas
early...something Big Red has been doing, for the most part, all
season long.
