ON THE HUSKER MENU: IOWA STATE CYCLONES
All eyes on Ames as NU travels to Iowa St. for a Cyclone showdown

By Jim D. Berryman

Times…they are a changin’.

As Husker fans from coast to coast sat down to watch Nebraska play Colorado last November, most had no idea what was coming down the pike.

At that moment, right before the NU-CU game, if someone would have said that Nebraska would be routed by Colorado, then play in the national championship game against Miami and lose big, then go into State College, PA the following season and lose big to Penn State, then head into a Big 12 match up with Iowa State ranked lower than the Cyclones and more than likely underdogs, we would think that that particular someone had been drinking heavily.

Beer please.

That unusual situation is what the Nebraska Cornhuskers face this Saturday as they head to Ames for a showdown with a bunch of Cyclones and Cyclone fans that are foaming at the mouth to thump Big Red.

Not only is Iowa State (4-1) ranked ahead of Nebraska (3-1) in the latest AP poll, (ISU is #19, the Huskers #20) but the Cornhuskers will more than likely be underdogs as well.

Beer please.

For the record, Nebraska still outranks Iowa State in the USA Today-ESPN poll.

Nebraska has a big assignment ahead of them this Saturday in the regionally televised game on ABC. Details on ABC’s regional coverage and Husker game watching locations nationwide can be found below.

The Husker defense will have its hands full with Cyclone quarterback Seneca Wallace. He’s been putting up big numbers so far this season, and talk of “Heisman” can be heard on the Ames campus and all across the plains of Iowa.

Eric Crouch is across the river, back in Omaha. So they aren’t talking about him.

Who can blame the Clones? Not only did they mount an impressive comeback and near win against Florida St., but they manhandled a Troy State team that the Huskers struggled with earlier in the season.

After a 9-game losing streak to the Huskers, and years and years of blowouts, the people in Ames think they’re going to win. Check any Iowa State message board on the internet and you see that many KNOW they’re going to win.

That’s the Cyclones’ problem. The pressure has somehow shifted to them.

We’re Nebraska.

And they are not.

Nebraska has just one loss on the season, and has yet to open Big 12 play. Many Husker faithful have been anything but kind to the Husker coaches and players so far this season. That could all change on Saturday.

But there are a lot of Husker fans that are feeling just fine. How fun is it really to not even be challenged by the Cyclones year after year? Sure it’s nice to get an easy “W”, but the build up to this weekend’s showdown with Iowa State is a heck of a lot more fun that trying to figure out if NU will beat the ‘Clones by 5 or 6 touchdowns. This is college football. And ain’t it great.

Yes, the Cyclones have an impressive team, but can they finally get the job done against the previously dominating Cornhuskers?

That will be determined on the field in Ames at 2:30 p.m. central this Saturday afternoon.

Beer please.
