Nebraska-USC:
Hype more fun than game, outcome

The
lead-up to the Nebraska-USC game was much more fun than what
happened on the field Saturday night.
Husker fans including myself were "tailgating", getting
pumped for the game, wondering what it would be like if
Nebraska and Bill Callahan could finally, finally get a
major win.
We're still wondering.
USC 49 Nebraska 31.
And it wasn't even that close.
On a personal note, I'm still wondering what happened to all
the Connecticut Huskers. Our game watch party in Meriden was
poorly attended.
We should have known it was going to be a bad night for the
Huskers when our own night started bad at Yogi's, the
Connecticut Watch site.
Since it was a Saturday night, and the bar has karaoke on
Saturday night in the section usually reserved for our
Nebraska group, we were herded into the dining room portion
of the bar/restaurant and had to crowd into about 3 large
booths. It didn't make for the best TV-watching experience.
Everyone had to turn sideways to see the game.
Yogi's has quality TVs, but we were a little disappointed in
our seats. And, disappointed in a much small-than-usual
turnout.
Still, the game was on national TV, it was a late start,
people could spend the day in front of their TVs in the
living room, and didn't want to rush off to Meriden. It's
understandable.
As the game went on, the karaoke crowd grew, and with the
game not all that interesting, Husker fans could be seen
singing along with the karaoke singer. Although a hearty
bunch of Connecticut Huskers stuck around for every "don't
make the score look so bad" NU touchdown right down to the
final tick of the clock.
Thank goodness the hype and build-up to the game were great.
Nebraska got a lot of attention this week, and even though
the kind of attention NU got on the field Saturday night
wasn't all that good, overall I think it was a good
experience for Nebraska; the state and the team.
The Callahan-led Huskers will get better, you can see it.
The Huskers are in-your-face close to breaking something
big. It would have been nice to see that big thing
against USC.
Didn't happen.
But it's not the end of the world. The season is young, and
the Huskers are still a top-25 team.
At least in my book.
Here's to hype!
And to the really quite decent karaoke singers.
