September 12, 2004 TOs SINK HUSKERS Five NU turnovers major factor in 21-17 home loss to Southern Miss By Jim D. Berryman MissingNebraska.com Somewhere Frank Solich must be smiling. Maybe just a little bit. The Nebraska Cornhuskers threw away the game to Southern Mississippi in Lincoln Saturday. Literally. Five turnovers by Big Red sealed the deal, as the Golden Eagles soared into town and snatched a 21-17 win at Memorial Stadium. Nebraska drops to 1-1. Southern Miss improves to 1-0. While Nebraska won the statistics game, and on paper should have won the game, they also won the turnover statistic: Huskers 5 Golden Eagles 1. It was the second straight week of multiple turnovers, and while that didn't seem to matter much when the Huskers were lined up against Western Illinois a week ago, it certainly mattered against a better team in Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles were able to do just enough to pull off the stunning victory amongst a sea of red. We tip our hats to the men from Hattiesburg. Now the Husker focus must return immediately to what lies ahead…namely Pittsburgh on Sept. 18. If they hold onto the ball, it should be a great game. If not, it will be a long afternoon. We realize this is a year of transition at Nebraska with a new coach, new offense and new quarterback. Problem is, most Husker fans were counting this game as a "w", realizing tougher games are down the road. This one hurt, but it's not as if the Huskers were not in the game to win it. They simply gave it away. Let's bounce back, Big Red!
