Can current Husker coach Bill Callahan and his Huskers do the same?

With a tough road game in Los Angeles against the Southern Cal Trojans waiting in the wings a week from Saturday, it's hard to offer up much more than a passing glance at Nebraska's opponent in Lincoln this Saturday. (09-09-06).

The Nicholls State Colonels are coming to Lincoln!

If I had a nickel for every time I thought of Nicholls State and football, I would still be a very poor man.

Call it what you will...a gimme,  a sure-win, a filler game, a record-padder, it's one more week until USC, and despite the slam on what is surely a fine school in Louisiana, the Huskers have to take it one game at a time and defeat the Colonels on Saturday. Otherwise a showdown with the Tinsel Town Trojans won't mean much at all.

Division 1-AA Nicholls State comes into the game with the Huskers sporting a 1-0 record after shutting out Southern Arkansas 35-0 last Saturday. The Colonels are considered a strong 1-AA team.

Just look what happened to Colorado last weekend in Boulder. The Buffs lost at home to Division 1-AA Montana State in shocking fashion.

At the same time, it's hard to compare the Huskers and Buffs this season, as Nebraska seems to be heading in an upward motion and Colorado is obviously on the way down.

So, the Huskers should cruise to an easy victory, based on a solid performance against Louisiana Tech last Saturday.  The Huskers also come into the game at  1-0.

Kickoff for the game is 12:35 p.m. central. There will be no TV coverage, however you can listen to the game live on the Pinnacle Sports Radio Network on a number of Nebraska radio stations and a few others outside Nebraska. Sirius Satellite Radio will also have the game on channel 152, available nationwide.
