Let's Not Forget The Big Picture
By Justin Hesser
June 20, 2002

The scene was one that Husker fans had seen too many times before. Well maybe not too many times, but too many times in a row.

Lets forget the scene for a second and look at the big picture. It was quite a feat for the Huskers to just appear in the College World Series. The CWS is similar to basketball’s Final Four. The nations best teams meet in one city and battle to find out who’s the best.

Imagine this, the Nebraska Men’s basketball team making it to the elite eight in the NCAA tournament. Husker nation would be ecstatic. Not one fan would wonder what could have been or called the season disappointing.

So why’s baseball different? It’s not.

How many teams are in the CWS? Eight, an elite eight that battled to advance from an original field of 64. Exactly the same except instead of a Final Four there’s a CWS.

The Huskers, who did have a record of 30-17 at one point, came on strong towards the end of the season to earn an NCAA bid. A team that in late April looked to be struggling, proved skeptics wrong and finished the season by going 29-5.

They continued to progress through the NCAA tournament, and after an impressive Super Regional looked as if they would get that CWS win for sure. It didn’t happen though, and although they left the field broken hearted they have no reason to be.

You can look back and say “What if?” but that would be wasting your time. Instead look back on Nebraska’s great season and start to look ahead to next season, as the Cornhuskers continue on that road to not only win a CWS game, but the CWS.
